Every floor is different, so we start with an assessment, checking the filler, the surface condition, and how the stone has worn.
From there, the process depends on what’s needed. Holes are cleaned out and refilled where necessary. The surface is honed to remove wear and bring back an even finish. If you prefer a polished result, we take it further. If you’d rather keep it honed, we leave it there.
Once the stone is restored, we seal it. Travertine is porous, and a good penetrating sealer gives you time to clean up spills before they become stains.
The goal is a floor that looks right and stays that way, so you don’t keep calling back every few months.
Travertine can be finished in two ways. Filled, where the natural holes are levelled with a colour-matched compound for a smoother surface. Or unfilled, where the voids are left open for a more textured, rustic look.
Most floors we see were installed filled, but over time, that filler wears down or comes loose. Part of the restoration is deciding whether to refill or leave some texture exposed.
We can work either way. If you want a cleaner, more refined finish, we refill and hone smoothly. If you prefer the stone’s natural character on show, we restore around it.

Acidic cleaners etch the surface, and what looks like a stain is often physical damage to the stone.
This can’t be wiped or scrubbed away. The affected area needs to be honed back to remove the etching and then repolished to match the surrounding floor.
It depends on the look you want.
If your floor was installed filled and the filler has worn or come loose, we’d typically refill before honing. If it were left unfilled for a more rustic finish, we could restore it that way. We’ll assess what suits the floor and your preference.
DIY kits don’t offer the control or range of abrasives needed to work travertine evenly. It’s easy to create swirl marks, uneven patches, or push filler out of the holes.
Most DIY attempts we see end up costing more to correct than having it done properly in the first place.
Mopping removes surface dirt, but it won’t fix dullness caused by wear or product buildup. If your floor looks hazy even when clean, the issue is usually residue from the wrong cleaner sitting on the surface, or the finish itself has worn down.
